What Brands Should Look for Beyond Follower Count

Profluence · September 25, 2026

You have a shortlist of creators. Their follower counts are known. This checklist covers what to look at next, before a partnership is agreed.

1. Read the comments, not just the count

Open a creator's last several posts and read the comments. Are people responding to the content itself, asking questions, sharing experiences? Or are comments short, generic and repetitive? Replies from the creator and returning commenters are good signs of a real community.

2. Check who the audience is

Engagement from the wrong audience does not help a campaign. Ask the creator for audience information from their own platform dashboards — region, age range, language — and compare it with your target market. Most creators can share screenshots or exports on request.

3. Look at consistency over time

One viral post can inflate every average. Compare typical posts with the outliers. A creator whose ordinary posts perform steadily is often a more predictable partner than one whose numbers depend on occasional spikes.

4. Consider direction of travel

Is response improving, stable or declining across recent months? Momentum matters because a partnership runs in the future, not the past. A smaller creator with steady improvement may deliver more than a larger one who is losing attention.

5. Review public context

Search for the creator's name and handle outside the platform: press coverage, community discussion, previous brand collaborations. You are looking for anything that would make a partnership uncomfortable for either side — and for credibility that numbers do not show.

6. Judge creative fit

Would your product sit naturally in this person's content? Creators know what their audience accepts. A partnership that forces an unnatural format usually shows in the response.

Putting it together

No single item on this list decides a partnership. The point is to replace one number with a fuller picture. Our Creator Intelligence guide explains how these signals relate, and Creator Analytics vs. Creator Intelligence covers the difference between reporting numbers and interpreting them.
